Why they minor in Women's & Ethnic Studies
Mariah Boudrieau ‘23
Hi, my name is Mariah Boudrieau. I am a political Science Major with a WEST Minor. My reason for choosing WEST as my minor is a little unique. I am a Professional NASCAR driver in the NASCAR ARCA Menards series, and I love educating others on my career path, and what it's like being a female race car driver. NASCAR is mostly a male dominant sport. So, as a female, I face some challenges. For example, I get overlooked for opportunities based on my gender. I get turned down for sponsorships. I get picked on for being a competitive racer. I am spoken too very differently and sometimes even in very dirty ways compared to male counterparts. I really want to bring another perspective into the WEST community. I stand very strongly in female equality and inclusion and being a female racer is a challenge. As Danica Patrick once said, “I was brought up to be the fastest driver. Not the fastest girl.”

I chose WEST as my minor after taking WEST-1010 in my sophomore year at UCCS. The class opened my eyes to the extent of the injustices deeply engrained in our society. I continue to educate myself on the subject because it allows me to be more socially aware and empathetic to others’ situations. Practicing these skills allows us to make necessary, systematic change that benefit us all.
